Our dentists are skilled at carrying out pain-free tooth extractions, even under the most complex circumstances.

Introduction to tooth extraction treatment

Treatment time: 1 appointment.
Purpose: To remove diseased, infected, or loose teeth that can no longer provide function and aesthetic to your smile.
Results: Painful symptoms will subside once the healing process begins/infection will not threaten your mouth and general health.
Anaesthetic and drilling: Anaesthetic only.

What is the process behind a tooth extraction?

Step 1: Examine your mouth and assess your symptoms.
Step 2: Local anaesthetic is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding gum tissue and bone. We will only proceed to the next step once we are sure you are fully comfortable.
Step 3: The tooth is gradually dislodged and removed with forceps. All fragments are carefully removed. The bleeding is controlled using gauze.
Step 4: Once your gum has healed, you and your dentist can discuss tooth replacement options.

FAQs

When might I need a tooth extraction?

Tooth extractions are common when:

  • Gum disease has reached an advanced level.
  • A patient has severe levels of decay and cavities.
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted (semi-erupted).
  • Teeth are crowded (prior to orthodontic treatment).
  • A tooth has become loose due to a blow to the mouth area.

Do I need to replace the tooth I’ve had taken out?

In the majority of cases, tooth replacement treatment is recommended after an extraction. This is because each of your teeth has a role to play when you talk and chew, so even the loss of a single tooth can disturb these functions (even if you don’t notice it right away).

Wisdom teeth and crowded teeth do not need to be replaced.

How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

You should be able to resume normal activities within 48-72 hours. If you are seeking to have a dental implant placed after an extraction, you may need to wait several weeks for the jawbone to fully heal.

Is losing teeth inevitable at certain stages during life?

Absolutely not.

It’s possible to retain all of your natural teeth for your whole life. Knowing your risk factors for common problems which may affect your dental health is vital, though. During your routine dentist checkups, we can let you know which conditions are most likely to affect you and if you have any early signs of chronic dental-related issues that require supervision, maintenance, and treatment.
