Your smile is one of your most distinctive and expressive features.

A dental crown can improve how you feel about your teeth and help you gain back the confidence you may have lost from living with a visibly damaged tooth.

Introduction to crowns

Crowns are caps that fit over the remaining portion of a damaged tooth. A crown is adhered in place with strong dental cement and made from lifelike materials, leaving you with a natural smile.

Treatment time: 2-3 appointments.
Repair:  Moderate to severely damaged, infected, or decayed teeth.
Results: Protects a tooth from further decay and damage. Cosmetically restores a tooth.
Anaesthetic and drilling: Yes. Removal of some tooth enamel may be needed.
Suitable for: Patients seeking to restore a tooth or who wish to replace missing teeth with a bridge.

How does treatment for a dental crown work?

Step 1: Consultation to assess your teeth and discuss your options. We may need to take a CBCT scan of your mouth, in addition to photographs, if an infection is present.
Step 2: Your tooth will be prepared for the crown. This may involve removing the decayed area of tooth enamel. The tooth will then be reshaped under local anaesthetic. Once the tooth has been prepared for crowning, an impression or digital scan is taken and sent away to the dental technician, who will create your bespoke crown. You and your dentist will decide on a shade for your crown that matches your current tooth shade.
Step 3: Your crown is ready to be fitted.

Why choose to have a crown?

  • Enjoy the benefits that come with being proud of your smile.
  • Our crowns are handmade to precise specifications.
  • Completely natural-looking.
  • Durable.

FAQs

How long do crowns last?

The lifespan of your crown will depend on what it has been made from. For back teeth that are less visible when you smile, we may suggest using gold or metal alloys. For teeth such as incisors and front teeth, porcelain is more appropriate as it matches your exact tooth shade. Gold and metal alloys can last for around 20 years, whilst porcelain crowns last for 15-20 years.

Can crowns be a cosmetic solution?

We will only ever place crowns on teeth that require restorative care. If the damage to your teeth is mainly superficial, we may suggest composite bonding or veneers as opposed to a crown.

How do crowns work for replacing missing teeth?

Crowns form part of a dental bridge, providing the tooth-like element that bridges the gaps in your smile.
